There have been two actresses that have played Doctor Who.

Joanna Lumley played the 14th Doctor in "The Curse Of Fatal Death"

Arabella Weir played an alternative 3rd Doctor in "Doctor Who Unbound: Exile"

Both these were comedy stories and not considered part of the main plot.

Personally I think it would be strange if Time Lords could change gender because it would mean that gender issues would be very complex. For example, back in 1963 when good old William Hartnell was the Doctor he had his grand daughter Susan with him. Imagine how odd it would be for him if next time he met her she was a man called Steven, and how odd for her that Grandfather had become Granny.

If a female Doctor was cast seriously for the proper series I would like the role to go to an unknown actress who would be brilliant at it. I think casting anyone famous would make the program into a "Hollywood freak show".
If someone famous has to be chosen I would go for Asia Argento who is talented, fun, sexy and so very beautiful.

New series in 9 days... I can't wait. I'm like a 7 year old on Dec 24th! It is going to be great!

If they ever DID cast a woman as The Doctor, I'd go for Kate Beckinsale (classy Brit).

I'd jump in a Police Telephone Box with her anyday!

I wouldn't like to see any actress as the Doctor to be honest - unless it was in some kind of alternate universe context like the Big Finish audio play with Arabella Weir as the Doctor.

My reason - There's nothing in the Doctor Who cannon that would indicate that Time Lords can change sex when they regenerate. It has been implied in a couple of stories that female Time Lords can choose their appearance when they regenerate, unlike the male Time Lords who seem to have to take what they get, but nothing indicates they can change sex.

So, I think if the Doctor changed sex, it would really go against the grain of the show's history.

i personally would go for Joanna Lumley, i know there were rumours abound in the 80's that she would take over from the Doctor, and she did a small stint in the Comic Relief story "Curse of Fatal Death.

I love listening to her speak as she has such a classy voice and would make a good Doctoress?
