I guess it depends on the age of the people going and what their interests are. I mean, if you are on vacation to SA and you're from far away, then sure make sure you go see it. It has some history to it, obviously, but if you're not into old museum type stuff, then skip it. Personally, I've been several times, and it's pretty boring to me.

The Alamo is an excellent place to visit while you are here on vacation, but it is not necessarily fun. It really isn't meant to be. It is more like visiting a Civil War battlefield. It is a historical landmark that will take about an hour to walk through if you stop in the gift shop or listen to the lectures given in the courtyard. The fun is taken out when you step in the door. The atmosphere is reverent and somber. Men are asked to remove their hats before entering. The main building is lined with state flags and plaques honoring the memory of those who died there. If you are a "softie" and stop to listen to the history lesson provided in the courtyard, it will almost bring you to tears.
If you are looking for fun, there is plenty to do at the Riverwalk that is a short distance walk from the Alamo. We usually park at the Rivercenter Mall. They have river access and is very close to the Alamo. Parking there is a little more expensive than other places downtown, but it is super-convenient.
Hope you have a great vacation!

It is a great place to stop and soak in some history! There are other things to do around the Alamo as well, including the Ripley's believe it or not museum, market square, and the riverwalk.
If you're into history, there are also Mission tours (the Alamo wasn't the only mission in San Antonio, just the most famous...) that you can take to visit the other various missions around the Alamo.
Check out my link for more details on things to do in San Antonio.
Hope this helps!

The whole area is great. The Alamo is not fun. It's a historical monument and it's very interesting. It's within walking distance of the Riverwalk, a very unique mall indoor/ outdoor, on the water. Restaurants, music everywhere. Family atmosphere. Great picture spots everywhere. Great hotels on the Riverwalk to stay at. Reserve early and be sure to get a room with a balcony overlooking the riverwalk. Ride the boat on the riverwalk for the grand tour, then put your walking shoes on. Mercados are everywhere and you can ride hotel shuttles around town. Best time to go there is April May, June. Late July -August is hot!!
A little ways down the highway in San Marcos you can ride the chilly waters of the Guadelupe River on rubber tire tubes if it's hot enough. July is a great time for that. Great little camp sites everywhere.

In my honest opinion, you will be bored..I thought when we saw it , it would be by itself all out in the open..instead its smack dab in the middle of downtown..Has alot of history but dissapointing..Your best bet is the river walk not far from that..there is six flags over texas, which and amusement park..Go to New Braunfels and go tubing in the town of Gruene...You would thoroughly enjoy that experience..You can go for hours floating down the river..The schlitterbaun water park is another good spot for fun..Gruene is a little historic town full of little shops and a couple of restaraunts..The Gristmill is a good pick, aloft the river..good luck
