yup, your number one culprit is the dryer. if used properly, it can be your friend ;-) you just wanna avoid OVER-drying your clothes. so instead of having them tumble till they're as dry as bones in the desert, take them out while they're still a bit damp and then air dry. (if you live in an apartment like i do, you can easily find little drying stands.) the advantage of using the dryer for a little while vs. avoiding it completely is that your drying time later will be shorter. good luck ;-)

Ive had the same problem for years. I finally started buying clothes that were slightly too big. Cotton is the fabric that usually shrinks, so in the future I suggest buying a size larger in all your cotton shirts. For the shirts you already have, the only way to prevent shinkage is to hang dry them.

Depends on the fabric. separate by color. Meaning white's and darks. Then separate by what the label says. For example: Cotton, wash warm. Knit, wash cold. If you have wool, kashmir, or anything that's scratchy you wash gentle cycle, cold only. Do not put in dryer. As for cotton and knit you can put in the dryer on Low knit or Low cotton. Or if all else fails hang it up to dry. Then when dry just put in dryer on air for a few minutes and it should by fine.

Go to shirts with a percentage of polyester. It is the 100% cotton that will shrink in hot water.

Use Cold Water, they have special washing powder for it. Also don't use Hot setting on your dryer, it will shrink them too.

try to always follow your care label but they aren't infallible. wash in cold water and hang dry or if its something you are really concerned about turn to your local drycleaner. they can either give you some good ideas or you may feel better letting them clean the item.
