By diplomatically trying to work things out with other nations. Just as we try to compromise with our spouses & families on a smaller scale, why can't we do that on a larger scale with other countries?
Edit: Judging from most of the previous answers here, there are too many ignorant people in this world for that ever to happen.

Qui desiderat pacem praeparet bellum.
He who desires peace prepares for war. The irony is that he who desires war ALSO prepares for war. The world is evolving toward peace, though.
Europe used to be a feudal battleground and the U.S. used to be one big killing field as well as China and Japan. Even the Koreas aren't really shooting (but they're aiming). Look at them now. No state vs. state type of battles and no more territory to conquer. The middle east and Africa are next. Maybe. It is in the human nature to fight for one reason or the other, but history shows progression toward unity and civility. To reduce wars, ironically, the governments that have no qualms about vaporizing people just to stay in power have to be replaced by democracies. That's a very hard thing to do through peaceful means. What individual people can do is just not start new wars. But look at the American Revolution. The colonies created a war where there was none. Was that wrong? Now America is the place that gets the most immigration because of the gold-paved streets and free money (jk). Also the UK and America are best buddies. On the government level to stop wars, start being good to people and respect basic human rights. I'm sure it would be a very very peaceful world if the Allies surrendered and the Nazis took over the world and killed all the undesirables, right? But there would be NO human rights, NO equality under the law, and the king of the world would have a terrible looking moustache and fart all the time. Rather, we should fight when it is warranted and be prepared to present the case for war to the world. In the Iraq war case, it was a few leaders that felt Saddam was SO bad that it didn't matter what happens to whoever else, he's gotta GO. And why not make a few bucks and expand their power in the process! OOPS, that didn't turn out so smoothly. Now we must make something good out of something bad. Good thing Saddam is gone, though. Only a few thousand maniacal dictators and warlords to go.

The pic is Captain Pike isn't it?
The best way to prevent war is to spread Democracy and Capitalism. Countries which hold these values do not go to war with one another and improve the quality of life for all of their Citizens. This does not mean there will be no war, but free people who have opportunity are far less likely to be radicals, and thus live peacefully. The biggest thing we could do today is reduce our dependency on Middle East oil. This addiction has funneled trillions of dollars into countries which do not have stable and mature societies. Only with this kind of monetary support do these countries continue to exist.
Live long & prosper.

1) reduce competition for resources
2) reduce population
3) get man into space (although this will only delay it).
There will always be war as long as there is limited resources, a growing population, and limited space. Any other ideal, goal, conception, or political system that suggests otherwise ignores the basic reasons why war exists.
Oh, there are methods for delaying it, but that is all that is, as useful and desireable as delay can be!
How to fix?
1) Encourage education in third-world countries to make proper use of their resources and encourage scientific research on even better methods.
2) Stop giving free food to populations already too large to be supported in the area they live.
3) Support EVERY space initiative you can. Get man into space.

The only way is direct talks with the enemy and come
to a truce (which will not be possible with the terrorists
we are now fighting), or by winning the war by wiping
out the enemy. (we have too many sympathizers these
days to do this).

Eliminate the human condition. Take away the power and wealth from those 'leaders' who start wars for purely personal, religious or covetous reasons. Stop hubris and deflate the massive egos of those who always want more land, more money, more power, more influence, or more control. In the past 75 years, look at the top five 'leaders' whose personal insanity and thirst for power resulted in the deaths of millions of people:
Joseph Stalin slaughtered 10 million of his countrymen, and died peacefully in his sleep;
Adolph Hitler gassed 6 million Jews, gypsies and homosexuals, then committed suicide before he could be brought to justice in an international tribunal;
Idi Amin massacred 2 million people in Uganda, then retired comfortably in "exile" for the rest of his worthless life;
Saddam Hussein murdered over a million Iraqis, and is the only one of these five deranged cretins to face a court of law for his crimes against humanity;
George W. Bush has killed 675,000 Iraqis, 3,000 people who happened to be in the World Trade Center twin towers on 9-11-01, and 3,218 U.S. soldiers - all because his family had a personal vendetta against Hussein and his oil buddies wanted all of Iraq's easily-accessible OIL.
When will Bush be tried in an international court of law and be hanged for his high crimes against humanity??
We can reduce war be keeping mad and derelict morons from attaining positions of power on this Earth. -RKO-

War can be avoided if they can force the government that use of force is not the proper remedy to solve disputes. Negotiation, sanction, blockade, mediation and arbitration are some of the non-violent methods for settling disputes amicably.

not gonna happen as much as i'd like it to. war is beneficial to all major governments in the world as a) a way to increase economic seurity in the world and b) to secure the supposrt of nationals in pretty much every way even if you disagree on a rand scale. You'd be hard pushed to find a brit who didnt like churchill even if he was a bastard (I don't like nazis or nothing though)
