Right now I'm all over Dreamgirls.
But Chicago was also amazing.
Rent was and The Phantom of the Opera were pretty good too.

Has to be the 1942 classic YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, starring James Cagney. It's the true story of showman George M. Cohan and the several patriotic songs he contributed to our culture. All the music is in context, which, for me, sets it apart from the fantasy of other musicals. This movie showed be required viewing to be a citizen of this country.

There would be no competition for Singin' in the Rain, with its joyful recreations of early musical numbers, perfectly in keeping with the theme, if it were not for that extended "Gotta Dance" sequence, which -- fine as it may be by itself -- has no connection to the plot and ruins the structure of an otherwise marvellously constructed picture. Whattheheck, exuberance rules, and I'll vote for it anyhow.
