Planning my trip to KL (my last was in 1983!).
1st day at Theme Park. Sunway or Genting or A' Famosa?
2nd day shopping at One Utama or Mid-Valley or KLCC?
3D/2N only due to budget/time constraint. Checked with a few local travel bureaus & they all give different opinions! Thought maybe ask the "experts" - KL ppl. :-)
KL taxi drivers not switching on their meters & taking tourists for a ride. How true is it? or is it being exaggerated?
KL crime - robbed at knife point as mentioned by someone in Yahoo! Answer. How serious is KL crime?
I know - so many questions. Sorry, have to know. I'm from Kuching, don't know much about KL.

Bobby - thanks for yr reply. Visited Genting in '83 - no theme park yet, only casino. No Sunway & A Famosa then. Yes, I do want to go to one of those Theme Parks but which?

AQ - thanks for the tip. Blend in with the locals eh? Good idea, (though my Cantonese is really lousy! good only at Hokkien).

If you're coming to KL, do you really want to go the theme park?Because theme park is not that exciting, and the closest to KL would be Sunway Lagoon.
KL is a shopping heaven. You would find all the things you want here (If they are not that rare of course). If you want to spend time on shopping alone, I would say that three days wouldn't be enough. Seriously. You would want to go to KLCC, Mid Valley, One Utama and all (if you're a shopaholic). If you have big budget, come and shop at KLCC, it's full of boutiques and expensive stuffs. But if you still like such ambience, but would rather have an array of cheaper alternatives, then you might want to try Mid Valley or One Utama. But if you're staying in KL, Mid Valley is easily accessible.
You would also want to visit the Chinatown or Petaling Street, the centre of fake/counterfeit/generic goods, but it is quite an interesting place. Just don't be too naive, they would force you to buy then. Make sure you act tough, and don't touch the things unless you really want to buy them. You might also want to spend your night at Bukit Bintang area. It's happening and lively at night. Just take a stroll, but be careful. Don't be alone late at night there.A lot of dodgy people sometimes.
The crime part - yes KL has a high crime rate, but it depends. Are you travelling alone? If you're, then don't walk at the back alleys, especially at the area of Central Market, Masjid Jamek and surrounding areas. They are full of muggers. Being robbed at knife point?yeah, might happen but if you stick to my advise and don't show that you're not local, I believe you'll be fine.
Taxi driver-again, don't show that you're not local. Act tough. It helps. If they don't use the meter, just ask. If they refuse to use, leave. get another cab. KL is full of cabbies, and they are colorful(the people of course)You might want to learn some of the main roads in advance for the cover-up. But don't worry, not all taxi drivers are like that. Some might even show you around.Depends on your luck.
All in all, don't worry. I believe you are going to enjoy your stay here. After, we 're not that different from Kuching,we're all Malaysians.

Well, if that's the case, genting and sunway both have pros and cons. Scrape off A' famosa. Genting is more popular than Sunway I believe, and it's famous for the colder weather up there. but now, it's not that cold anymore and you need at least two days to really enjoy everything there. It's not that great but kids would love the place definitely. the outdoor theme park is the closest we could get to six flags and universal in malaysia.
Sunway, on the other hand, is suitable for a day outing with family. the water park and various other theme parks are just suitable for family, who doesn't have that luxury of time to spend. plus, the park is nearer, at the outskirt of KL.

okay angel, truthfully i have been to genting and i didnt fancy it at all. It's warm up there and the journey is horrid. My kids love sunway theme park/water park. U know kids and water park is inseparable. So i would say go to sunway. forget A-Famosa.
Taxi in Kl- Most major malls has designated taxi queue. If u get on the taxi queue, these cabbies use meter and wont jack the price . They will also take you wherever you wish to go. Dont wait for taxi by the roadside, these cabbie are mostly choosy and wont use meter. Some places like the airport or KL sentral, there is a designated counter selling taxi coupons. Name your destination and pay at the counter on the spot. Go to taxi queue, give the coupon to the driver. Easy. Dont go for touts cabbies.
KL crime- Do mind your pockets if you are at KL Sentral. There are many indonesian women pickpocketing over there. My sister lost her mobile phone in a matter of second while browsing a clothes stall. Places full of immigrants are always troubled e.g, sungai wang plaza, chow kit, puduraya etc. No knife involved, maybe more to pickpockets. Personal tip: dont put your mobile phones on the table when you dine. I lost my mobile phone in one of the best restaurant in Bangsar. Indian boys pretending to sell some sari, lump the whole thing on the table, then left with my mobile phone. Only realize a few minutes too late. But this stealing and pick pockets are not as severe as in Italy. Maybe it's just some whiff of bad luck that it happens. So dont fret too much ya.

1st day: up to you... I'd go for Genting.
2nd day: I'd say Mid Valley
3rd day: see upon arrival, especially if you're opting for Tony Fernandez's "luxurious" airliner...
- depends. Some switch on their meters, the stingy-ones don't. In certain areas you can't get a meter taxi at all, and especially in rush hours they don't like touse meters. If so, negotiate the price before taking your ride so you don't quarrel with the cabby upon arrival. Whatever you do, don't tell the cabby you're from Kuching and that you don't know much about KL, because you might be taken for an extra trip to get some more mileage or you might be probably overcharged. But it depends on the driver, some are honest, some are not.
- nothing has ever happened to me, except for the fact that 2 pairs of my shoes got stolen (and another 2 in Kuching:). I can say it's pretty much safe, except for thefts. Let's say that KL in general is as safe as Jalan Gambir or Waterfront. There is a small risk, but let's don't make things too big, shall we?
KL isn't that much different from Kuching (I know them both very well) apart from being much bigger. And KL has like zillion times better public transport. The rest you should know.
Edit:
Yeah, Bobby's idea of skipping the theme park is even better, but there isn't that much goodies on Petaling street since DBKL started their patrols and crackdowns on sellers of fake watches, pirated DVDs etc. Some more all these stuff you can get in Kuching, and if you're looking for other accessories you might find them at cheaper price at Jalan India or pasar minggu in Kuching. Mid Valley or Berjaya Times Square (and the whole Bukit Bintang area) are way better for shopping than Jln Petaling. As for DVDs you can get them in Kuching, good quality (email me and I'll tell you where, but I don't give info on BF!).
What's worth of buying in KL are clothes as you can get them much cheaper than in Kuching and you can get nice designs too. The rest is +- same. Handphones in Wisma Saberkas are often cheaper than those in Sungei Wang or Low Yat or any other place in KL.

Day 1:- genting highland, it has more things to play than Sunway and A famosa.
Day 2:- Mid-Valley. if you havent been in mid-valley, it a good time to visit at least once. KLCC its for foreign tourist. 1 Utama, may be your next trip.
you can stay in Amada Hotel PJ, it is affordable and walking distance to LRT.
Some taxi driver dont follow meter, ask them 1st before boarding. if they cheat you just report them.
KL it quite save to travel, just stay in public places and avoid dark and deserted allay.
just stay alert and you ll be save and have a nice trip!
