Nick saw himself as apart from the other party guests. He felt he was an outsider.

1.) Dr.Eckleberg's eyes preside over the Valley of Ashes. and they are the eyes of God.
2.) Nick is an observer, he doesn't take part in the drama going on at the party. He once says somewhere that he was both fascinated and repulsed by the mood in the party. He feels like an outsider watching a private play.
