I think there is a component that is inherited, and the tendency can be augmented or diminished to a degree based on environmental upbringing. Orientation is kind of a scale, with 1 being ultra straight and 10 being ultra gay (and bi falling at the 5 mark). Most 'straight' people probably for in the 3 to 4 range, and most 'gay' people probably fall in the 6 to 7 range. Therefore, do people just say, 'today, I'll be gay'....no, it's rarely a conscious choice.

A person can be born with the tendency to be gay. Whether this tendency is reinforced or not depends upon the culture and environment upon which the person grows up. Think of a boy who tries on lipstick out of curiosity. Once he crosses the line, do you think he will ever think of himself as straight ever again?
