They are available today - in fact, I already drive one - there are lots of choices for electric cars, and more on the way. Electric vehicles can have performance as good or better than gas-powered cars, and they cost a lot less to operate (only a penny or two per mile.) Why don't we all know about them? Why do so many people 'know' wrong facts about them? Good question!

First, the inexpensive ones:
*
Electric vehicle conversions (a gas car converted to run on electricity) are generally pretty inexpensive, and can be had for as little as $5000. You won't get the latest technology, so you'll have a limited driving range. But a conversion is a great way to 'get your feet wet' in electric vehicles. This is the sort of car I drive. It does freeway speeds, accelerates and handles fine, and looks like a normal car. I charge mine up at work so I have enough juice to run errands on the way home. Here's a link:

How about new tech electric cars? If you don't need to get on the freeway, you might like the ZAP. The ZAP is only $10,000 brand new. It's very cute, but tops out at about 45mph. It's not much bigger than a motorbike. Link:

How about the ultimate EV? Take a look at a modern electric car:

The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using new, advanced Altairnano batteries (based on research from MIT) - can:
-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)
*
Now, as to performance - you can't beat the Tesla electric sports car - it does 130mph, and 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds. Driving range is 250 miles:

You can still find then but they are rare. The NEV's are not quite as good. The Vangard is what you want to research. Citi car was the name of the actual car. You can find these on ebay from time to time, but they are still running in the thousands of dollars for a 76 modle year. There is also a site that sells used cars that have been made into electric cars like a 93 sentra. If you google NEV's or electric cars you should find alot of info. Not to mentio that George Clooney ownes a new one can rememvber the neame but it is outragouslly priced as it is made to order.
I also found a few porches that were made to electric conversions nice job and they were still very fast.

If you have some mechanical skills, just build your own. It's not hard. If you can use a vehicle that has a short range of about 30 to 40 miles per charge which meets lots of people's daily needs, build your own. Check out - www.e-volks.com , www.texomaev.com , www.ev-america.com , and just google, Electric Vehicle Conversion, there are lots of people out there than can help, and answer questions for you. I purchased a nice car with blown engine for $200, and all the conversion parts for around $1500, and am building my own as we speak.

Check out the tesla if you get a chance. its not really viable yet for the average consumer at 75,000 for a two seater. But, the technology exists to make a pretty cool concept car.

Big oil hired a bunch of Lobbyists to make laws against them making them...
They had to recall them all because Big Oil spent millions of American tax dollars to keep us from having fuel efficient cars...
(the link in the answer above mine is a good one - fascinating documentary)
Now they are lobbying against subways being built!
