I sawa the movie, it is one of my favorites. I did not read the book however. In the movie, her father is sent away I believe to India? Not sure. There are definite scenes of them living there and her joys to be there. After he leaves, she is then put in the girls school. Her mind is phenomenal as she is able to process through all of the turmoil by her many beautiful daydreams. They are quite magical. She ends up living in the attic as a poor orphan when it is believed that her father has been killed in action. She befreinds a little black girl servant and together they are adorable. My favorite thing about this story is the way that she never lets the cruelty of the world change her loving heart. She remains kind, loving, and generous.

It has a great ending when she and her father are reunited by shere accident. I am always crying at this point. It is such a great movie! Plus, though she is never a vengeful person, those that had wronged her-like the school's Director, end up getting thier just rewards.

I know I didn't answer your question exactly, but I was just so glad to know you were studying this story. I love it!!

Actually, it's the Crimean War, the same setting as Florence Nightingale - the English fought the Russians for control of India and Afghanistan. It's WWI in the very bad movie based on the book (moved the setting to New York City and made Becky into an African-American).
