Depending on your career, I think professional, tailored clothing and shoes are more important than your watch.

I think you can find a nice watch based on style, instead of price. I would recommend a clean-lined silver, gold, or silver/gold combo that can be worn with any color. Make sure it's a good fit, not sliding around on your wrist. You can have a link removed if it is too loose.

Roman numerals or "dots" can look dressier than numbers. Stay away from dials that are bright in color. Black, white, or pearlized cream look the best.

It's best to avoid anything flashy enough to draw a lot of attention to itself. You want it to be an accessory, not all that people notice. A nice watch will make you look polished; a flash watch will make you look like a pimp.

My husband is a watch collector and has convinced me that a watch is the most important accessory to own. :) It is the first thing I notice about someone now. Especially if you're in a business position, you need to make sure you're not wearing anything cheap or too young. If you're a high up exec, you can get away anything, so break out the orange alligator strap! Otherwise, stick to higher end watches (Rolex, Patek, Audemars, etc.) or generic ones that don't look cheap (no one should wear Fossil after the age of 21).
