That + in the middle makes the signs inside the parenthesis stay the same, when you remove the parenthesis...
5x - 5 - 6x + 12
If you had a - in the middle that would change all the signs inside the parenthesis.

it depends
for multiplication it follow a set of rules
negative X negative = positive
positive X positive = positive
negative X positive = negative
positive X negative = negative
this can be sumarized as
similar terms gives a positive number
unlike terms gives a negative number.
eg. -3 X 5 = -15
-3 X -5 = 15
3 X 5 = 15
3 X -5 = 15
it is different for addition and a little confusing
it simple case where the is no clashing of signs
like 5 - 7,
if only one has a minus in front of it and the other a plus or nothing then
you subtract the 2 numbers like there is no sign. and the answer will have the sign of the one which has the larger magnitude.
eg
2 - 7 = -5 (7 - 2 = 2 and 7 is larger than 2 so the answer is negative)
-3 + 6 = 3 (6 - 3 = 3 and 6 is larger than 3 so the answer is positive)
if the two number have the same sign in front of them then you simply add the two numbers and keep the common sign
eg. 5 + 5 = 10 (5 + 5 = 10 and the answer stays positive)
-2 - 6 = -8 (2 + 6 = 8 and the answer is negative)

when it is adding you just
simply add the same like-terms.
dont worry about changing the signs.
when it is subraction
for example
(4x + 3) - (4x +3)
all you do is change the sign
and the following signs
like this...
(4x +3) +(-4x -3)
it will make life much easier for u.
