Fevers generally do get worse at night. I wouldn't just write off a fever that high. I have seen my son have hallucinations from fever when he was in the hospital with a roto-virus. Its a very common virus and given the tummy gurgles, I would wonder if your little one could be coming down with it too. So, act quick and if he spikes a temp tonight, take him immediately to the ER. Don't give him any more Motrin. Motrin is only covering up whatever is wrong. The doctors need to be able to measure his temperature. Motrin breaks the fever, but the fever keeps returning. That is a sign that he needs checked up. Good luck. Will pray for you. G

He probably has a viral infection. Fevers are the body's way of fighting off infection. Fevers are a positive sign that his body is fighting whatever bug he has. For a higher fever, like the 104 that you're describing, fever medicine is fine because it will make him more comfortable. Fevers also often spike up at night. Maybe consider switching to Baby Tylenol because it's easier on the stomach. I would however call your physician and insist that he take a look. He may have an ear infection, strep throat, or some other bacterial thing going on for which he may need antibiotics. It is more important to pay attention to how he is acting. It's hard to determine the degree of illness based on fever alone. Some kids just run higher fevers with illness. If he's acting very ill, then that's more significant than the actual degree of fever. Of course, if the fever spikes to 105 or beyond, that's more of an emergent situation and a ER visit is in order if it's after your doctor's office hours. Make sure he's getting lots of fluids. Fevers are worrisome, but they're not harmful to him at the degree you describe. Your doctor should not be opposed to seeing him though if you're worried. Good luck!

Kids fevers are always worse at night. My first was prone to high fevers with illness.

You can alternate motrin and tylenol every two hours. Keep a chart so you'll know when you gave which medication. Also, when it goes up, undress him and put a cool wet cloth on him. Use room temp water, not frigid. Take the cloth off and rinse it regularly to keep it cool.

Personally, I'd take him to the doctor and have him checked out. There has to be something causing the fever.

well, what did the doctor say? whether or not you agree with what he says--he knows what is best for your baby.
having a fever of 104 is terribly life threatening for a baby.

for the time being--wet washclothes with cold water--put one under each arm pit, and one between each leg, also one across his neck and forehead-that should bring the fever down.
no matter how much he shivers-DO NOT cover him with a blanket--
I would give baby tylenol rather than the motrin==tylenol works better at bringing down fever, while the motrin is more for pain in babies

A fever is usually an indication that his body is fighting something. If he's been running one for 3 days, I'd take him to see his pediatrician. If you don't like the ped., find one you do. If you do like the ped., but don't like his answer, then ask him to explain. Doctors sometimes forget that we commoners don't know what they do, and if you're a first time mom, you'll have more I-don't-knows than moms who've been there before. HTH!

This needs to be dealt with soon. A fever is usually a symptom of an infection. Infections don't usually go away on their own. High fevers can cause death, blindness, and deafness. For this reason, I urge to you go to the emergency room when it gets bad tonight.

My kids fevers always get higher at night, and the Dr. told me not to worry until it hit 106, YEAH RIGHT, I switched doctors, it sounds like he has some kind of virus, might want to get it checked out by another Dr.

Oh I'm really sorry to hear that. Have you tried using a damp or moist cloth to cool him off?

Has he been rejecting any food?

I'm no doctor, but my mom used to cool me down and give me a little food or juice every now and then. And eventually, my sickness went away.

And MAYBE it's allergies. The motrin is probably the cause of the stomach gurgles.

you need to go to the ER if the childs doctor is not offering you any suggestions or hasn't seen the child
too much Motrin can also be bad...so I suggest you take the baby immediately to the ER

When babies run fever continuously for no obvious reasons, I say go ahead & take him to the emergency room. Especially if you've given him something for it more than twice & it doesn't seem to work.
