There are many train stations in the city.

Closest station would be Roosevelt on the South Shore line that comes in fron Indiana. I believe the Metra Electric trains that conm in from the south burbs use that line too. Second would be the CTA red line.

The LaSalle station is a decent hike to Shedd, Union Station and Olgilvie Transportation Center are even further walks, though I know Olgilvie has brochures on how to get to all of the popular attractions from there, vis busses, CTA, short walks, or combinations thereof.

Bon voyage!

Yes, if you mean CTA train. You can take a green, orange or red line train to the Roosevelt Rd. stop and walk east. It's not that far of a walk (about 4 blocks according to the CTA map) and pretty pleasant on a good day.

If you mean a Metra train, you'd have to get off at the downtown station and go east to State Street and catch the 146 bus. it will take you directly to the Museum Campus and the Shedd.

Like, what train station?

If you're talking commuter rail (Ogilvie Transportation Center or Union Station), be prepared to hike a long way from West Loop to Grant Park, then south to the Museum Campus and the Shedd. South Shore Line is not as bad, since it stops in Millennium Park, but still...

Closest L station is Roosevelt, I think. But that's no picnic, either. Straight shot east to the Lake, though.

Depends which train station you mean. If you mean the main station in Chicago, Union Station, it's walkable, but it'd be a very long walk, perhaps a mile or two. If you mean the L stop at Roosevelt, or the Metra Station at Roosevelt, then yes, it's an easy walk, perhaps five or six blocks.

Look at google maps. Anything within 13klms of the CBD would be safe, but expensive (with the exception perhaps of Refern). The further out you go, the cheaper the housing - generally speaking. Lots of train stations, look at the map and follow the train line.

We walk from the Roosevelt stop. If you don't mind walking then it is no big deal. If you get tired you can take a bus.

It's debatable and there are basically several possible answers to the question...

Is this one of those philosophical questions like if a tree falls in the woods and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?
