Angelfish (Family Pomacanthidae) can be found in the tropical & semi-tropical zones around the world which support coral reef systems. They are most commonly sighted hovering above reefs by themselves or in twos; very rarely are they seen in larger aggregates. Angelfish are some of the most frequently seen denizens of coral reefs and can be sighted reliably in much of the Western Atlantic (7species), Hawaii(many endemic angels), and the reefs throughout the indo-pacific.
Angelfish can be indentified by 4 criteria: a round, laterally compressed body, a continuous dorsal fin, a spine on the gill covers ( a bit more difficult to spot), and long, extended rear dorsal and anal fins. These last two criteria are of much help in distinguishing the angelfish family from the often confused with, butterflyfish family. Also similar to butterflyfishes is the territorial behaviour displayed when potential angelfish of the same species wanders into a rival angelfish's territory. This 'charging' behaviour can be seen if you go diving at a reef. Their feeding habits are reliant mainly on sponges.
