It is a reminder of the past, we learn from our mistakes and learn what happened in history back then. Why did they do that and why are somethings reflecting Greek history now. Look at the architecture of the buildings around the world it reflects a lot of Greek designs and influence.

Where do you come from?? The Greeks laid down the cornerstones for the way of western life(culture, politics, science etc. They are the first in the west to to question religion and the gods as the prime movers of everything. It is true that the Greeks did not event democracy or mathematics or philosophy but they are the first ones to question and rationalize and write about them. They are the first to rationalize natural phenomena and question the role of god in creation. There are other great civilizations in the east like Indian, Chinese etc., but these had 0 influence on the West.
Also for my archeology friend (Rasberr...) Democracy did arise in the middle east but it was from the Greek city states in the area. Greeks like the Phoenicians were spread throughout the Mediterranean with colonies. The concept of nation did not exist then. There were only linguistic separations.

before anyone says it - no, the ancient Greeks did not invent democracy. Demoncracy came from the Middle East, and only lasted for less than 100 years in Athens.

and while they didnt really set the cornerstones of politics/science/art/philosophy etc for the world (because other areas such as China and the Middle East were advanced in those subjects long before Greece), they did for Europe and european history. Most, if not all European societies have admired the anceint Greeks for their expertise in these things. Even the great Romans.

~ western civilisation emerged from europe. I did mean western civilization, but tried making a point that western civilisation is NOT the "world".

It is true that the Greeks did not event democracy or mathematics or philosophy but they are the first ones to question and rationalize and write about them.

~in western civilisation, yes, not the first in the world.

Also for my archeology friend (Rasberr...) Democracy did arise in the middle east but it was from the Greek city states in the area.

~no, it is thought that democracy came to Athens from greek settlements in the middle east.. however... The Greeks (including settlements/"colonies") were not the first in the world to use democracy.

The concept of nation did not exist then.

~i know this, and did not mention anything about a nation in my original post.
