Try going after small businesses that don't have the overhead or space for hiring someone full time. It isn't easy to get the first clients. If you know anyone that has a small business, ask them to use your services.

If you have a little extra money for start up, advertise in local magazines, or get listings of newly registered business names from your city or county courthouse, then send a postcard letting them know you are available. The names can be searched for free (except your time), or you can find a list service in your area and pay for their lists. New businesses may be easier to enlist than existing ones. They don't have the accounting history that you would have to start with, and they usually don't have the money to hire someone full time. On the other hand, they often don't have the money to hire anyone at all, preferring to do it themselves until they are established.
