Microscope and telescope were the greatest inventions which not only improved daily life but our future. The Renaissance began from evolutionary thinkers at different periods in Europe. Remember that different countries' Renaissances began at different times. The Renaissance began because the intelligent class of civilization began to write things down. That is the most import part of the Renaissance that people wrote things down. It also began with revolutionary thought that tampered with the Great Philosophers and the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church.

It is hard to define a "greatest" invention, but it would probably be the printing press.

There is no set date that began the Renaissance, either, though it began in Italy around the 14th century.
