Tough it may seem like a simple question there are many types of owls, some are tiny (pygmy owl) other are massive (eagle-owls).
Reduced in its simplest form, sun makes plants grow, plant gets eaten by bug/mouse/ other prey, which in turns gets eaten by the owl, which in turn can be eaten by, larger owls, or larger predators.

It's now been summed up fast lets take a small owl as an example : Northern saw-whet owl. Sun makes plant grow, insects eat plants and get eaten by shrews, or plant (or plant parts) get eaten by mouse or vole or other small rodent, saw-whet captures and eats the small rodent, saw-whet is also prey to any larger owl, weasel, raccoon, fox, anything that will eat a small bird since these are very small and weight only around 100g or so.

For a bigger species take the great-horned owl. Same beginning as the saw-whet, sun makes plant grow, insect eat it and become part of the food chain, rodents and small mammals eat the plants, however this is where it changes a lot, since the great-horned is so much larger it is able to take many other prey higher up on the food chain, things that would eat a saw-whet like medium owls, raccoons, weasels are now prey. The great-horned is a large powerful owl and very few things will go after it as it can be quite dangerous, that's not to say that a lynx, coyote or other medium/large carnivore couldn't go for one but it would be uncommon.

If you have to choose a species to do work choose one of the smaller species the food web won't be as hard to draw out. If you wan't any information on owls you can check out pretty much any species on http://www.owlpages.com/owls.php?genus=all&by=commonnames

Owls eat things like mice, rats, moles and gophers, rabbits, snakes.. small animals, basically. Meaning that they would be carnivorous. They're beneficial to farmers and their crops because they keep the vermin population down... They're hunted by larger birds like hawks or eagles, occasionally cats can pose a threat to them. Hope this helps a little..!
