Is this an unborn daughter? And you're choosing an actual name?I've heard of a hyphenated name, (like Anna-Marie) but never an underscored name. An underscore is an underline - but it usually is not underlining anything except a blank space.
Underscores are very often used in e-mail addresses. If your wife is simply using this as part of an e-mail address it makes perfect sense. It separates words - because an e-mail address cannot have any spaces.

There is no way your wife can call someone kacie underscore lei. Underscores are used to screen names and e-mails which are like the same as a space between words.

Well... _ is an underscore... - is a hyphen.. If you're using it in an email address, then go with the underscore _. If you want it in a REAL name, like you're having a baby and are picking out the name that your child will have the REST OF HER LIFE, then you want a hyphen.

and underscore is _.
It just happens to seperate two name without making it seperate. Because Karcielei would look bad and be hard to pronounce, Karci_lei is better.
I suggest using the dash though. Because an underscore name is only for emails and such. Examples of dash names are:
Jean-Paul, Marie-Kay, ect.

she probably ment a hyphen because its pretty unusual for someone to put an underscore in their childs name. by the way underscore means:
draw a line under: to draw a line underneath something
emphasize: to give emphasis or extra force to something

I'm not sure she means _. Does she maybe mean -? Lots of names are hyphonated. I don't know of any that are underscored.

What about a thing called a "space" between letters? I don't think anyone would want an _ to be in their name...
