The first thing you need to realize is that your going to be competing against guys who already know how to play. The second thing you need to realize is that although speed is very important, it is not as important as knowing how to take and deliver hits. Running backs get hit, often, and hard. Its the defense's job to put you on your back, and it hurts. If you've never played before, you're probably under the impression that playing running back is as simple as getting handed the ball and running with it. Unfortunately, there is much more involved. Knowing where to be to receive the handoff, or pitch for one. You must learn the plays. Show the coaches that you're a sponge for information. Go to the first practices with a completely open mind, and a clear willingness to outwork every other kid on the field. One last piece of advice - if after the first couple times you get tackled you realize that you don't like it, play a different position. Running backs must love contact. If you don't love getting hit and delivering hits, the position is not for you.

Definitely learn how to grip the ball. Thats the most important job of any position, not turning the ball over. That and bulk up if you need to. Mostly the lower body and especially the cleans since they boost your explosiveness. Plus don't run away from tacklers, your going to get hit anyway. The more you try running away, the easier it is for them to tackle you.

Aside from that, make sure you know how to read you blockers. If you can't find the gaps, you won't get anywhere with the football. Watching a lot of game tapes will help out with that. If you can catch, that'll be a big bonus too.

start by being a team player , show up at practice and pay attention to your coaches. That,s the place to start. Just be patient, it's your first year, if you don't have a great year and you don't play all that much watch what others are doing and learn. Don't get down on yourself. I can tell you that you have to be a patient runner , follow your blockers and wait for a hole to open up. oh, and also treat your body well. I hope and pray the best for you.I wished I could find out how your season goes.

Here you go, from a guy who was in the same boat:

1. GET IN SHAPE.
Be in great physical condition, both strength and aerobically. Players who are ready get to play. I cannot stress this enough.

2. STUDY THE GAME.
Practice coming out of a three-point stance, taking handoffs with a QB friend who knows what QBs do, and learn your playbook. RBs also get respect for not fumbling, so get some non-fumbling drills into your weekly workout regimen.

3. PRACTICE LIKE IT'S THE FOURTH QUARTER OF A REAL GAME, EVERY MINUTE EVERY DAY.
You must demonstrate how badly you want to play on every down.

I was in your same position last year, won the starting position, and had the second most TD's on my team. My only problem was, I didn't run north south, i was more of a east west runner, and that hurt me a LOT. Many times when i could have had first downs, or TD's, I tried to juke instead, and it hurt my stats, as well as my team. Run north south, not east west. Also, if your a skinny kid, try to pick up some wieght. I had to pick up wieght and was still very light.

Be physical. Run north and south. Too many high school running backs try to outrun everyone to the sideline. Just get rough and try to get 2 or 3 yards rather than losing 4 or 5.
