PATA & ATA actually refer to the same hard drive interface.

The term PATA refers to the conventional standard IDE drives...."Parallel ATA".

ATA was retroactively renamed Parallel ATA (PATA).

"Serial ATA" or SATA uses a different interface & controller which provides considerably higher tranfer rates than PATA ....300MBps on SATA II.
