For an excellent inside look at the 1994 genocide, I highly recommend An Ordinary Man, by Paul Rusesabagina.
He was the model for the film Hotel Rwanda.

We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families: Stories from Rwanda by Philip Gourevitch is an excellent journalistic account of that same era.
