i was taught this song in primary school but can only recall that line from the english translation. I think it was a maori song?

There is an old irish traditional
song goes something like..

And I wrote her a letter, and I sealed
it with a ring..

I think its called "Take a Letter Maria" its about a man who is leaving his wife and has is secretary type a letter to his wife and he encloses his wedding ring.
