6.5x52mm Carcano is the correct answer.
But there was no "magic bullet".
The notion of a "magic bullet" comes with the mistaken thought that Gov. Connelly was sitting directly in front of JFK. In reality, Gov. Connelly was in a "jump seat", which was actually situtated several inches lower than Kennedy's seat. In addition, JFK was also right next to the rear door, leaning over and waving to the crowd. In contrast, Gov. Connelly was in the middle of the car, right next to his wife.
If you reposistion the two into their correct, exact spots, you see that there is no need for a "magic bullet". Things line up fairly well.
With all due respect to "tammipup":;
I've seen video footage of an 89-year old man working the bolt action of a rifle indentical to Oswald's, he managed it in time required.
As stated already in the thread by "DennisIsEvil", Oswald was a trained marksmen from his time in the Marines. He was actually a very good shot, unlike how he was portrayed in the movie "JFK".
The shot from the Schoolbook Depository to the motorcade was actually a very easy shot, for anyone trained on a rifle anyway.
The Zapruder film footage is what it is. I've heard some experts say a head shot from the back can actually make the head go back. I don't know. I won't argue that point.
Have you ever read a book called "Case Closed"? It pretty much seals the deal on Oswald.

The rifle used was a 6.5 millimeter Carcano, the standard rifle in the Italian Army in WWII. The rifle was chambered the 6.5x52 carcano, an older cartridge used by the Italians, but still a potent one. The cartridges used by Oswald were Winchester Western brand with 162 grain full metal jacket (but with exposed lead at the base) of 0.264” caliber. Most Carcano rifles have a 0.268” or 0.269” bore, so the bullets used would be under sized for the rifle and not optimum for accuracy.
Shooting this rifle then cycling the bolt and taking two more shots in under six seconds is fast, and degrades accuracy, but is possible and not an improbable act. One has to remember that the limo JFK was in was moving slowly and almost directly away from the snipers nest. Lining up a shot at a slowly moving target that is less than 100 yards away is not hard. All Oswald had to do to get a hit at center mass was to lead the target by about 3-4 inches. The bolt on most old Carcano rifles operates slickly and quick as long as it is not bent, rusted or completely free of lubrication. While the iron sights are set for between 200-300 yards, the scope he used was entirely adequate for shooting at short range.
I have a 6.5 Carcano that is so worn out, that a cartridge that should clock at 2000 fps only move about 1800 fps. It is a piece of crap, but the bolt operates quickly and it is accurate enough to hit a man sized target at 100 yards with no problem. I can shoot 3 times into a 100 yard target in less than six seconds. Anyone who says the Carcano rifle could not have done this is a fool.

From what I've heard it was a "magic" bullet which pretty much means they have no clue. Some people say it was a piece of ice shaped like a bullet and melted inside Kennedy's body, but if I'm not mistake Mythbuster's proved that one wrong on their quest to find the "magic" bullet that could have killed him. The only reason they call it this is because there was no bullet left in his body.

The make, and calibre of bullet, given, by numerous OTHER contributors, is PERFECTLY correct, - but, the assassination, was accomplished by THREE bullets, - fired, over a period, of less than SIX seconds! The "BOLT ACTION", of the alleged murder weapon, - plus, the AIMING, and FIRING, - with such DEADLY ACCURACY, - could NEVER have been achieved, by ONE MAN, in such a SHORT period! So, THIS, - plus, the MOMENTUM of the President's BODY, - first, FORWARDS, - then BACK, - then, FINALLY, - slumping to the SIDE, - leads ME to believe, that Lee Harvey Oswald, - the alleged LONE GUNMAN, - did NOT act, ALONE!

According to the Warren Commisson - a "magic" bullet that travelled in and out of his body and Governor Connelly's and ended up on the stretcher with his body. Pretty amazing. Pax - C.

look it up on wikipedia or some other source. There is debate about what kind of bullet his his head because its not certain exactly what kind of gun was used in the actualy assassination.
The Warren Commision is a sham, I would suggest you read High Treason and watch this...
