I am not an event planner myself, but I would think that public relations, marketing, or management would be majors that can allow a person to have a career as an event planner. Multi-tasking and organizational skills are a must I'm sure, and being able to prioritize and work under stressful situations as well regardless of which major you choose. Here is the website for the US Occupational Outlook Handbook (Meeting Managers/Planners) to get more info: www.bls.gov/oco/ocos298.htm

I don't know that there is any one thing you would major in, but I would suggest taking oral communications classes, some business finance classes, computer classes especially web design and even some graphics classes and also get familiar with the different aspects of what this would entail. You want to be able to offer your clientale a variety of options, any of which would meet their needs so you need to make sure you have business relationships with entertainers, caterers, limo services, photographers, hotels and the like. Get out and network, once you are serious about your business make some phone calls and set up meetings with people in these businesses to introduce yourself and your business. I would also consider meeting with people already in the planning business and talk with them and get their advice and see what they have to say.

You can major in Communications; however, some universities have an event planning emphasis available. Just research different schools to see what they offer.
