I took 4 yeas off to take care of our youngest child and it gave me a lot of time to reflect and to study.
If you can afford to do it, I say go for it.
Love and blessings Don.

There are about 2000 people each year that gather on springer mountain georgia and start walking/hiking to Katadin Maine. (less than a 1000) make it all the way up the Appalatchin(sp) trail. For them, it is a sabatical from the world and it becomes a mental exercise in which one learns about oneself completely.
If you get the chance, go for it....Otherwise try reading "Walking on the Happy Side Of Misery" by J.R. Tate
From personal experience it was the most enlightening thing that can be done.
It takes anywhere from 5 to 7 months to complete for the average person

Yes, right after undergrad I spent about a year reading philosophy and filling in the gaps. I probably should have been enrolled in an MA program so I could have gotten credit for this.
I knew someone who quit their job as a lawyer and was studying the rule of law in several third world countries on a Fulbright. He's a lowly diplomat now, but he said that he felt reborn after sorting things out and taking a new approach.
I think it's a great idea.

Not for a whole year, but I took a 6 month break when I was 24 to travel the country by truck. It was very good for me, and I found out alot about myself.
Even though it cost alot of $$ and required a bit of catching up afterwards, I have no regrets for doing it. Actually, if I could, I would definatly do it again.

I have thought about this many times....If I weren't married and my husband wouldn't kill me. I would stop what I was doing and explore America (I can't afford to explore the world). Go for it!!!! If you are young and you can do it - walk the parameter of Florida or California for goodness sake. Explore the world and get in shape before you become one of the working wounded (out-of-shape, no time, stab your colleague in the back type). Be Safe and Explore the World - at least the USA.
All Fun!!!!

I have a tape from a woman who did exactly that. It was called 'Stella Maris'. And it was very profound.
It is something that I personally would love to do - as long as I could financially afford it, and could be guilt-free about leaving all my responsibilties behind.

After I graduated from High School I went to other country and stood there for one year, just relaxing. It was a nice experience.

Hahahahaha.
But seriously, people often do this. You'll find that one can't seriously think for an entire year though, so maybe go abroad or pick up a hobby? Or think, if you insist.

Gee! Wouldn't that be nice?! I'd love to! Who's going to pay my bills? That's always been my problem.
