ok after reading a few answers iv got this far i jumped teh car again and had it ideling for about 5 mins and it cuts out with very low battory there are 5 leads to teh alternator all are earth apart from 2 1 real fat one straped on with a nut wich is live and feeds 8.5v when the car is running the other is part of 4 on a block connecter and feeds me 8.5 while the car is running the other 3 are as far as i can make out earth as when putting a meter between teh battery- and teh conector i get continuety and on the other 2 leads (live) the small one gives me continuity with a huge resistance and the other real fat live gives no continuity at all to earth at all the voltage accross the batt terminals when running is 8.5 and when not running about 8 going down to 3 when the car cuts out

any more ideas from theres results

some good suggestions already made. lets be practical. a say 70 ampere hour battery is going flat in 10 hours means somthing is drawing 7 X 12 volts = 84 watts min. this is not a courtesy light! it's a major fault! use clip on ampere meter on battery lead to test charge/discharge as alt light on suggests u/s diode pack allowing discharge. check for voltages on heater plug rail whilst running. = 0

If you have a new battery, and the alternator tests good (I'd get a second opinion there) the only thing left is something drawing the battery down, perhaps a short somewhere in the system or a light not going out. Perhaps a trunk light, or glove box light that is staying on?

If you have a volt meter you can check your alternator at home. With it running it should be close to 14 volts at the battery terminals. If not, your alternator is bad.

Sounds like the Alternator to me, although I'm surprised the battery is going flat that quickly. Some years ago I has an Astra diesel and the wiring loom completely burnt through (I smelt burning for a short while but disregarded it - summer windows open) It was 3 days of regular driving before the battery died completely.

Along with what the other guys are saying I would check the earth leads!
If the battery and alternator are running OK it could be a loose or corroded earth lead!
The one from the engine to the body and the one from the battery to the body!

you have something draining your battery, it could be a light that isn't shutting off, or maybe a clock or radio, anything that needs battery power, have a mechanic check this for you maybe they can find whats draining your battery. good luck.
