She also flails her arms so severely during these tantrums she ends up smacking herself in the face. What can I do to have them stop, but keeping in mind she's still under a year old.

Unless he is hurting himeself ingnore him. When you give them attention for a temper trantrum they will continue to do it to get what they want.

Best way to handle tantrums is to totally ignore them. Let her flail around and hit herself, she'll learn soon enough. They do what works so don't let the tantrum work. Distraction is another tool you could use. The attention span of a 9 month old is only a few seconds so distract her with something else and she'll forget about what she was crying about. This age they get frusterated because they have a difficult time expressing their needs. They also have just learned that they can manipulate parents. Sometimes they act out when they are teething or going through a growth spurt. Ride it out, things with children change rapidly. In 6 months it will be something else.

YOU should keep in mind that she's under a year old. there's really nothing you can do to stop her but you can help her grow out of it by not showing your frustration and anger when she does have a tantrum. Just keep repeating yourself in a low calm tone and she'll get the picture. It takes alot of patience so be prepared.

My daughter does this and it drives me crazy and has been since she waas 5 months. I put her down and let her cry it out most of the time. Instead of flailing her arms she does this clearing her throat thing and I flick her mouth, not hard, half the time she laughs. The thing that worked best for my daughter is to put her in her room in her crib like she is going ni-night, then she gets it out of her system, after she mellows out I go in there and talk to her...its never to early to start communicating in healthly way and then we go play. it also helped a lot to put her on a strict schedule with food and naps and bed time.

Ignore! Ignore! Ignore! However, I am trying to picture a nine month old having extreme temper tantrums......??? It's hard for me to imagine, because I cut those as soon as they start.

A baby having tantrums so young isn't down to bad behavoir, just sheer frustration! She cant get her point across to you and it's stressing her out!! You cant stop them until you have both learned to communicate effectively with each other! Don't worry, it wont last forever, she will learn to talk soon.

put a travel cot or similar in the corner of the main room of your home, pick her up and put her in there. as soon as she stops for one second, take her out, give her hugs and give her something to DO or play with.
to stop this from happening, even though she is only 9 months, talk to her, tell her what you are going to do " we are going for a bath, geting dressed now:" etc
What are you feeding her?? cut out all colours and favours, read labels on food, they make my son crazy!!!
google Failsafe or look at this http://www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info/index.htm#buttons
just try it for a week, you will notice a differents, if you want even better behavour, see a dietitation who speciallists in child behaviour and diet.

Lol my eleven month old was doing the same thing a couple months ago. He was also banging his head against things. Look at my starred question about ignoring bad behavior.

shall we see with the toy taking it sort of feels she is used to getting her way and is spoiled and hasnt discovered to proportion yet - time to commence - and if she bites bite decrease back and enable her understand that it hurts. dont bite so difficult that it takes out a bite of pores and skin or bruises yet difficult sufficient to get her interest. i bit my daughter on the arms because of the fact she felt it extra there and that i knew how difficult to realize this. if she is throwing tantrums like this now think of her in 3 years. wow.

Have the child's ears checked. In my experience, the behavior you describe can be a symptom of pain in the ear canal. She may not be hitting her face by accident, it may be in effort to relieve the pain.
