Effective *for*? That's at least three different questions there, so I can give you at least that many answers:
--Effective For Bringing Someone Down to the Mat. I'm shocked nobody's brought up the Single- or Double-Leg Takedown, but I get it, *nobody owns* that move. ^_^ Never mind that if you cinch it higher and tighter and drop hard on it, it becomes a Spinebuster, which both Arn Anderson (back in the day) and Batista used to great effect.
But yeah, that's the *boring* answer, so I'll give you the runner-up. Drop Toe-Hold....Rey Mysterio always sets up the 6-1-9 with this, yeah, but *anyone* can set up nearly *anything* with this move. MMA and Pancrase people even have their own version of it, the Heel Pick, if I recall correctly.
--Effective for Finishing a Match. *That* depends on how you want to finish...we'll keep this simple and leave out submissions for now as they need their own setups...
The F5 is really good in general for knocking people the hell out, wherever, whenever. You're basically going from a Fireman's Carry, over the shoulders, into a Tilt-A-Whirl DDT with a lot of momentum. Only trouble is, you have to be *strong* to do it with proper control (meaning, to fluff it up enough so that it doesn't maim people when you do it).
But to get *right into* a pinfall, nothing beats a Fisherman's Suplex. You already hook the leg before you go over and back. And if you have the strength in your back to do the Northern-Light's style bridge the way Mr. Perfect/Kurt Henning did along with that, you have a move that is almost a guaranteed pinfall if you can get it off.
--Effective for Getting a Pop from the Fans. This can be almost any move, depending on how big the wrestler is with the crowd, but...
People like Legdrops, whether they come from Hulk Hogan or Matt Hardy.
People like Quick Head-and-Arm Slams, your Rock Bottoms (from The Rock) and Bookends (from your *face* Booker T.) People also like *Chokeslams* from the big guys because that is what fans *expect* from their big guys.
It's a pity we don't see as many Clotheslines as we once did because fans like those too...both the Ultimate Warrior's and JBL's careers rose and fell with the fortune of their clotheslines.
But hey, it can be anything, even that Lame Stunner Clone, the RKO, if a move gets enough of a Push behind it.
Which only goes to show....there's no accounting for taste. ^_~
Thanks for your time. ^_^ Hope this helps!

As in a grapple takedown, I'd say grab him by the hips and sweep his legs...i don't think it really has a name, but w.e
