It helps to maintain balalance and you use less enegy swinging your arms then useing your legs and other muslces trying to maintain a good balance with a walk...

compare it to a tail...same effect

try it hold your hads at your sides, you will get tired a lot quicker

For balance. You'll notice that they swing in opposition to your legs, that is to say, when your right leg is forward, your left arm is forward, and vice versa.

It's not vital to balance, it just helps and is more comfortable
