Is it true that in America these laws apply?! Y!?
Even more confused on the adoption law? If its a precaution against sexual abuse, would like to point out that 75% of sex attacks are carried out by straight men. (not lashing out at straight men in general....but they are!!!)

I can only speak to what I know personally. In South Carolina - single parents can adopt. This means that one person can adopt a child. Their partner does not have any legal rights to that child. Oh, you can get a paper that grants another person a say so in schools, medical and such; however, if the adoptive parent dies, it is not automatic that the other parent gets custody. I know this is very backward.
As for military service. A homosexual can serve except they must remain celibate and never ever be discovered (AKA don't ask don't tell), What they don't say is if the military discovers you are gay you are out of the military.
What are the reasons? Just plain old fashioned bigotry. This is all indicative of America's hypocrisy in being a great open nation without prejudice. Yes - some might say love or leave it. I say feel saddened by it and change it.

I'm pretty sure gay couples can adopt, but marriage is a no go and the military is a no as well. That's not entirely true, some states offer civil unions or domestic partnerships that are supposed to be equivalent to marriage but aren't quite there yet. You can be gay in the military as long as nobody knows about it. It's called the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. If you are found out to be gay they kick you out, nice isn't it? Here in the good old US of A we like to support government sanctioned discrimination, then after years of struggle and seeing the changes other countries make we change as well. Pretty sad isn't it? Where are you from, I'm moving there. : ) : )
I'd like to point out that most people don't actually think that having a gay parent makes you gay, as someone so sadly answered above. That person doesn't seem too educated, and certainly has no idea how genetics work. At least they have the lord.

Actually, London, nearly ALL pedophiles are straight men. The figure published by police around the world is well over 90%. So to the person who tried to argue that LGBT people are more prone to pedophilia, the OPPOSITE is true, if one bothers to consult the facts and statistics.
Thanks for your support. We also have a wonderful group here in the USA called PFLAG. (www.pflag.org) I hope there is something similar in your area - or perhaps no need for it!
EDIT - London, I am AGREEING with you! :o) and pointing out to the basher above that their logic is completely wrong. I meant to empahsize "ALL" and not "straight," sorry.

Gay couples can adopt, but in most states they cannot be legally married.
There is a resurgence in the right wing fundamentalists going on in the US right now- but it will pass once the current administration goes away.
Few under 35 years old are homophobes. 30 years from now all the old conservatives will be gone, and we'll look back on the anti-gay stuff, just as we look back on interracial marriage and think that the laws that were once against it were stupid.

Actually, gays can't serve openly in the Military, they have to hide their sexuality if they want to serve.
Adoption laws vary from State to State, for instance Florida has outlawed same-sex adoption.
You are quite correct about the sexual assault though.

Gays can serve in the military, they have a don't ask don't tell policy. If a gay admits their homosexuality they will be discharged as being unfit for service. Gay people don't molest children, pedophiles do. As far as I know, being gay does not exclude a person being eligible to adopt a child

These aren't actual laws in America. These "laws of morality" are supported by the current United States government.
I think it would be terrible if we did have these laws. I don't think whether someone is gay or not should have anything to do with serving your countries military or adopting children. However, some people in America would be in favor of such laws.

I am still trying to figure out why any gay man would want to serve in an army that does not want them, an army that will not take care of its wounded, an army that denies any responsibility for those who are left forever disabled....our army is a disgrace to our nation! I see those that want me to support our troops..the same troops that say they will "beat the crap out of anyone who comes out in their unit.....oh, yea...I am supporting this kind of stupidity. Leave the fighting to the straights...let them get killed off in Iraq. Gays, stay home and make LOTS of money off the war machine. good luck

Yep, this country is quite retrograde. It is probably due to the abundance of intolerant religious fundamentalists and their governmental minions.

If only more people knew that being gay means you like to suck and not "like it up the @ss", it would not be a problem.
