Only two kinds of lizards are poisonous, the Gila Monster and the Mexican Beaded Lizard. They both live in Mexico and California. Both of them have no stripes, so the lizard you found is not poisonous.

irulan is right only 2 lizards in the world are poisonous, the Gila Monster and the Mexican Beaded Lizard, which are both found exclusively in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and Mexico. They are both fat and brightly colored to warn you of their toxicity. Komodo dragons are not venemous but their saliva has an extremely high bacterial level.

It sounds like it might be a collared lizard AKA "Mountain Boomer". They are not poisonous, but do sometimes bite.

you should try to provoke it to see if it attacks you or not. it sounds like a rhine-nosed phantom lizard, but they dont like to live near water.
