what am i thinking of here?

My teacher mentioned some sort of small 3-10 poundish carnivore called like a syvit or syvet or something like that....I didn't know how to spell it but thought it was phonetic....I couldn't find anything like that online...any idea what word it is that I am looking for that sounds like that.
