Playing in a band which does bars or casual gigs, there are songs we all think of as standards. But I contend that there are a few standards we should think of as mandatory because you *will* be expected to play them.

Two I think of are Mustang Sally and Play That Funky Music.

So, the question is: if you were to pick five songs you would consider mandatory standards, what would they be?

So, the answers so far have been pretty good.

But I feel like I need to address the implied question about genre. I tend to think rock/pop, but I'd be interested in country, disco, jazz, any genre you like. Or even mixed up.

This question is really tough. It would be easy for me to list my five personal favorites, but that would be nonsense. To begin with, what kind of gigs do yuo do? Rock, classical, C&W, blues, etc? Each genre has its own standards. I would contend you should look to your specific audience for the answer to your band's needs.
Having said that, Rowdy eights, The Devil went down,
The turkey in the straw, The pub with no beer (This is certainly an Australian standard, curtousy of Slim Dusty) and Misty would be on my short list.

Sunshine of Your Love
I Fought the Law
Walk This Way
Southern Cross
Subterranean Homesick Blues

Something like that; Dylan, Cream, CSNY,... I like bluesy rock when I'm eating.
