What method is most effective in helping someone to realize the error in their ways? Sometimes I believe that a loving smack (or tap if you prefer) on the head will do allot more for a person than holding their hand! What are your thoughts?

For anyone who thinks this is advocating violence please do not bother answering.

Ignorance being mistaken for bliss is a fatal misunderstanding! If we are to belive in some higher power or ultimate being are we to believe that this being is ignorant? No I think not. Are we then to believe that this being is not in a state of bliss? No I think not. The absence of knowledge is not an escape from the consequences of actions and happenings. What it is a stagnant existence! We must learn from all things, not just that which pleases us!

I think that it depends on the mental and emotional stablility of the person. An act of violence i.e. a smack to the head, will be seen as negative re-enforcement, and possibly to the person 'punishment', if he/she is of low self-esteem or other personality complex. Thereby thrusting the person into a tailspin and not seeing the error in their ways, just knowing they are being punished. I think there is much more to be considered before one can approch someone in this fashion.

A fool deserves jealousy - what after all, is more blissful than ignorance?

Haha the loving smack will function as negative reinforcement, so that could work if you look at humans through a behaviorist lens. If you approached it through a cognitive therapeutic lens, talking and changing their mindset would be more effective. So, my knowledge of psychology fails me. Do both.

Personally, unless you are referring to raising a child, I don't think it is up to me to teach anyone the error of their ways. Every person had their own path to follow & will learn -or not- from their mistakes in his/her own time.
There is a difference between supporting a person and hand holding -you can be a friend or mentor or whatever by leading by example.
Sorry, I don't advocate either of your choices. I believe that personal choices/actions & how each of us present ourselves speak a lot more than anything we can say or do to another person.

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, Shame on me.

I think you should feel bad for them the first time, but the second time they get you, you should smack your own head.

Don't bother with fools. its a waste of time. If this is your child, then I would suggest more than sympathy or a smack, but maybe some intervention.

I was always told GOD looks after fools and babies. This is something I believe due to my life experiences.
GOD is all forgiving. So I think sympathy is in order. Just do not let your kindness be mistaken for weakness. Make your standards or boundaries known and stay firm.

I agree with you, but a lot of people think I'm a b***h for being that way. People can't handle the truth. They'd rather be coddled and lied to, so I would have to say that you need to know the fool and which method they can handle.

He/She deserves Jack Nicholson, from Anger Management.
Also, maybe a little "Tap" upside their head could straighten out some of those braincells o' theirs.

smack 'em on the head if that doesn't work, punch them in the nose. Okay don't go that far but write them off if you got to hold their hand constantly.
