No, not necessarily.
An intercooler is a radiator mounted in front of the coolant radiator.
Once air is compressed it heats up & expands. An intercooler cools the air causing it to be more dense, therefore more pressure is created at combustion, resulting in more power.

If you want your motor to live please plan on it. The intercooler reduces the the temperature of the compressed air after it is pumped from the turbocharger. In a gasoline engine it's critical to lower this temp. Without it you most likely will burn pistons, top piston rings and valves. Gas motors have no lubrication in the combustion chambers. As air is compressed it gains temperature plus the turbo fan connects to the exhaust fan through a bearing mounted shaft. More heat is created through convection.
Diesels can get away without one as fuel oil is pumped through nozzles with extremely high pressure into the combustion chambers. Diesels run much cooler because the heat of combustion is hundreds of degrees lower than gasoline motors.
You need to plan on a regular diet of the highest octane fuel available when you switch to a turbo gas motor to prevent pre -ignition damage.
I welcome more input.

exhaust drives a turbo. the heat transfers about is 300 degrees. an inter cooler cools that air down to about 200 if you use a water intercooler you can get that air down really low.
your preformance does better with cooler air.

No, you don't NEED an IC, but you will make a LOT more power if you put an IC on it. a turbo is compressing the air, which causes it to heat up quite a bit. an IC cools down the compressed air before it gets to your engine. Cooler intake charge = more power = more fun in the seat of your pants.
The only thing I can even think of is you may make the engine run hotter without an IC, but it shouldn't be very much.
Good luck!

It is better to install a cooler, it depends what parts you have for the turbo, most the time coolers are better.
