Ordinary moisture laten house dust entiering a red hot coil, gives off a smell as you describe. That is very common in electric furnaces. I dont know if you have a central system, but here is my experience.
We had constant odors of all sorts from the furnace. Our family is nose sensitive. There was the summer AC kind of mold smell, as winter came the heater elements on the electric heat gave off an odor. These are but two examples.
We solved the problem completely and fully by installing a central Electrostatic Filter onto our air handler in the basement. Gone is the musty basement smell, the electric heater smell and the other benefits are that it removes mold and mildew from circulating air, odors, viruises, bacteria, to name some.
You can go to the Carrier site and view exactly what an Electrostatic will do for you but let me assure you that if you spend this $750 on this unit you will solve all those air smell problems that pop up. Plus it will give you clean air, cleaner than outside air, a benefit to those with alergies.

Pesonally I use the cheap but effective way. Go to the laundry room and grab your fabric softener sheets ( I use Bounce). take off your register vent covers and put the fabric softener sheet between the air directors and the top so it stays put. Put the vent back in an there you go fresh scent all day everyday you can replace as often as needed, and this way also reduces dust in the air. Hope this works for you I have an allergy to dust and this is a perfect solution to the smell and dust.

you can try putting drops of an aromatic oil on the part of the heater that gets warm, though you'll have to do this maybe once a week, or when you can't smell the oil anymore.

They sell an air freshener that you spray directly on your air filter. It really works, comes in different scents, and makes your entire house smell fantastic. I cant remember the name of it but it is sold with the spray air fresheners.

First, I'd get it checked out by a furnace guy(or gal). Then you can buy, through some catalogs ,these air fresheners which attach to the grid of your
duct outlet. Really nice.
