James Butler Hickok was born in 1837, May 27th to be exact. By that time, the early American identity had been established. His impact on the American identity really didn't begin until after the Civil War, and that was more the responsibillity of a gullible journalist by the name of Henry Stanley (who later went to Africa to find David Livingston). Stanley once interviewed Hickok and was told by Wild Bill that he had personally slain over 100 men. Stanley published an article based on the interview and the legend of Wild Bill Hickok was born.

Even at that, I think Wild Bill Hickok's impact on the American identity was minimal. He was certainly part of the mythos of the Old West, but he was killed in Deadwood, South Dakota in August 1876.

He was the symbol of the strong man, fighting alone, needing no one and depending on nothing, and standing up for what he thinks is right. He symbolized freedom and (male) strength.
