Can I wear a black sweater with brown pants and brown shoes and be fashionable?

Yes you can. You will look sharp. I have brown pants and brown heeled boots and I wear them. If you feel comfortable then do so.

I'm assuming you really mean Tan and not brown....
but I could be wrong.

If your pants are a chocolate colouring, I wouldn't really recommend it. I mean, it would look alright I suppose (without actually seeing the pants) but you would be better to pair it with a lighter colouring or even a bright green or a lighter blue.

If your pants are actually more of a Camel/Tan coloring (light brown) then by all means, black would look sharp.
Oh, and keep in mind...
If your wearing brown shoes, stick with a brown belt as well. It's not a steadfast rule, but.. nothing looks sharper then a man who knows how to co-ordinate.

And most importantly, how do you feel in the outfit?
I've worked in clothing for a number of years and this is the number one question to ask yourself. If you feel confident in it then you have a winner :) --Clothing should have your own personal touch.
I'm guessing though (again) that since you're asking.. you're not feeling quite up to snuff in this outfit... first date? Job interview??... so, maybe it's best to go back to the closet & give another combo a whirl.

This is a question for 50 years ago when everybody looked at who was wearing what! Today ... it seems to me that one can wear almost anything and be fashionable. Have you ever noticed when someone wears something quite outlandish ... suddenly with a few weeks more and more people begin dressing that way. Example: Madonna wearing her underwear as outerwear.

Anyway my dear, you can wear whatever you want ... the main thing is that your clothes are clean. Don't worry too much about the outside .... just be a kind and caring human being from within and you'll be able to walk into a room wearing a burlap sack!

Enjoy and don't fall for the fashion magazines ... a lot of those models can't wait to slip into their jeans and t-shirts once their done with the photo shoots! ;)

Oh and BTW, I don't see anything wrong with the outfit that you have described! Go for it!

Is there even fashion these days? I think as long as your comfortable and not wearing half ragg, half nice clothing you should be fine. Yes black shoes would look nicer, but if you don't have black dress shoes the brown will be fine. Good luck and that sounds hot!

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!! I would suggest that you wear black shoes. If you do not wear black shoes, it would seem as if you pulled the first sweater you found in your closet and threw it on. The black shoes will tie up everything.

I really wouldn't suggest pairing brown shoes with brown pants. But if your really good looking you can pull it off easy! ahahaha then again if your really good looking you can wear a brown paper bag and still be sexy!

My best friend always told me never wear black and brown together. It makes you look washed out and you blend in with your surrounding's. Makes you look to "earthy" and kind of unattractive. I do admit some can pull it off, but I wouldn't try it.

i guess... it depends if the brown pants are dark or light... and it would go better with black shoes just so everything would be evened out

hmm...if ur not to overweight and have netural hair than probably. i would wear black shoes though, although browns not that bad...but i wouldnt' call it fashionable, just safe.
