Sadly, this does happen quite often. It's usually small talk so to speak. Just general complaints. Maybe an outlet to release frustration. Is it right? Not really. Personally, I do not do this. If I have a problem with someone I am seeing, I bring it directly to them and talk (not argue) about it. See if there is someway to solve or compromise in the situation at hand. Why do most guys not do this? I dunno.
To me, respect is treating a woman the same way I would expect to be treated, or even better. I guess I can thank my parents for teaching me that. Never to hit, yell, etc.
Lengths of respect. There are many, but to put it simply, just never saying a bad thing to another person about said woman, or women in general. Showing love is different. A lot of time, just being there, listening, and talking to her is the best. You can always send flowers, buy jewelry, but that is just materialistic. Simple appreciation of that person works well.

Okay, had to write even though this seems to be directed to men. I work with a lot of men and believe it or not, they are amazing and many show how much they adore their wives in how they talk of home/family. I think its precious that even though there are a bunch of people around, they still say, "I love you" when they are saying goodbye.
I don't know how anyone would have to draw a picture of what respect looks like, if you need to then perhaps you need to move on to another relationship or fix what is broken that you allow someone to treat you with less than respect.
There are a lot of WONDERFUL men who love and respect their wives, and it gets old when men are bashed as they are mixed in some big group of thugs, hoods and uneducated males. These men that tell their kids they love them, they are called heroes.

You can't honestly expect us to believe that both men and women don't talk crap about each other when they're in the company of their exclusive gender. It's like the cornerstone of all the sit-coms on T.V. This isn't a male thing, it's cuts both ways.

As for the question, from my view no. Then again i work out alone and more interested in my gym time the complaining about my significant other.
My respect and love is proven by me supporting him in whatever he does (even if i dont agree with it) and would expect the same in return.

In MY aquantences with the women I talk to or men I talk to about my girlfriend, I do talk crap about her.
One because, she is a great girlfriend, but she is such a beotch to deal with.
First of, it gives you a mind set. To hear yourself speak to other people about what you need and what you want.
We share our ideas because of things we have been through.
Its not disrespectful, its just the way people get though their problems.
You might be the biggest witch your husband/girlfirend/partner deals with. You have to know that men and women are not all like that.
However, if they are unhappy with you, the only thing you can do is just walk away, talk it out with them, or figure out what you need to be happy.
They will be unhappy with you no matter what, because it might not just be them, it might be you.

I've never experienced what you describe, but:
1) I would refuse to participate in that kind of a conversation
and
2) I would object out loud if people were talking about sexual relationships with their wives, especially in a disrespectful way.
I think it is disgusting to bring intimate things in public. It is a breach of trust.

You show your respect someone by keeping your promises to them and defending them when attacked by others. Confiding in friends about your personal problems and conflicts does not mean that you don't respect your spouse.
