When i log on, about ten little icons appear in the bottom right hand corner of my task bar. How do I know which ones I can safely delete in "remove programs". I've been told this is why my computer is very slow to start up. Is this true?

The easiest way, without having to install any programs, is as follows:

1. Open the Start menu
2. Select RUN
3. Type in: msconfig
4. Click Ok
-- A new window called "System Configuration Utility" should appear on your screen --
5. Select the Startup Tap
6. Simply uncheck the items that you do not wish for it to run.

Most Startup Items will have a strange file name, but you can view the path location of each item to identify the programs.

once you log on to your computer there are a lot more programs running in the back ground taking space on your ram and drains the speed of your processor, that you dont always know about. the best way to clean up your computer is to press Ctrl, Alt Delete and go to the task manager. if that fails there is usuall a shortcut in the start menu depending on your operating system. Once that has been opened click on the applications tab at the top this will be all the programs that are running in the back ground. once you have cleared the ones you dont want running click on the processes tab and there is usually alot of programs and applications that u dont need running. first there should be 4 types of user names one should be the your name or the name the computer is fromatted under and the rest should be SYSTEM, NETWORK SERVICE AND LOCAL SERVICE. sort them out by name and delete ONLY the ones under your name except explorer.exe which is the internet, tskmgr.exe which is the task manager and finally your anit virus program clearing the rest should do no harm. if by accident you clear the explorer.exe one you will be left with just your wallpaper no icons or a start bar if this happens simple restart the computer and all will be restored. Note everytime the computer is turned on you will need to do this.

A lot of programs starting on your computer's start up would slow the process.. You can either go to the programs that you DO NOT want to start and change the settings (Usually untick the box next to start with windows or something like this).. Or you could use a program like WinXP manager to edit the start up and tune your computer so it becomes "faster" (Supposedly)..

Yes this is true to an extent. All you have to do is go to the start menu. Click on run..., then type in 'msconfig'. A menu will pop up. Go to the startup tab. Then uncheck the boxes to the programs you do not want to automatically start when your computer boots up. Click apply and your done. You need to restart your computer for it to take effect.

You need to identify what each icon is for by hovering over the icon. Then you can use a small program like Mike Lin's "Start Up Control Panel" (available from http://mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to stop programs from loading when your PC boots. If you have problems you can always switch them back on.
