hormonal fluxuations. Sometimes my cramps make me want to die. My GYN suggested that the day before I start my period that I take Motrin -not tylenol- then keep taking the dose until I get past the first day. Usually, thats when the cramps are the worst. She said if you take the motrin before the cramps start, it will cause you to cramp less. It also is good for heavy bleeding because as an anti inflamatory, it keeps the blood flow to a minimum.
I know its not good to take Motrin all the time, but I used it for the first day of my period for awhile. Now I am on birth control and I have no cramping at all anymore.

I've always had teh same problem. It relates to the amount of hormones you release each month. The more progesterone, the more pain: the less, the less pain and cramps. Progesterone release is related to which ovary releases the egg at a given time. Often, one ovary has weaker muscles, so more progesterone is needed to force out the egg, causing more pain/cramps. A stronger ovary doesn't need as much progesterone so when it releases an egg one month, less cramps occur.
Also, stress is a big factor in hormone release, and therefore, cramps. Think back: during those months w/ the horrid four days, were you possible doing anything that caused anxiety/stress? This ca also cause more progesterone release.
in addition, diet. If you eat healthy, your body will have enough nutrients to function efficiently and wont need extra progesterone. However, if you don't eat enough, the exact opposite will happen: more hormone release.
Don't worry, I've dealt with this before and its not that big an issue. Just take Advilor Midol when you feel the cramps coming. Also, when I was around 20, I noticed this problem going away and the pain being significantly less and more regular. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I had the same problem, I read that it is because your ovaries take turns releasing an egg. One side can cause more pain than the other, thus explaining the random, death cramps. Genetics can play a part. Use heat, IB profon. The thing that solved alot of the pain for me was the Pill. I got on Ortho Tri-Cyclin Lo and my cramps have never been as bad as they once were!!
Good luck to you!

Believe it or not, menstrual cramps actually serve a useful purpose! Your uterus is squeezing hard to remove its blood-filled lining in a hurry — those cramps are actually making your period go by faster!
