Very likely a hernia ... does need to be checked out by a doctor... they often need to be fixed surgically, and life-threatening complications occasionally occur if they are bad and not taken care of, so he needs to have a doctor at least watching it.

The lump is very probably a hernia. Hernia is a weakening of the muscle wall in the pelvis or stomach area. Sometimes, depending on the effort part of the small intestine forces itself into the wall opening and produces a lump.
This can be very painful and even dangerous if it gets strangulated. It can be easily repaired with a small surgery (I already had 3 of those !) that you go back home the same day. He will need some TLC after the surgery, for about a week or so, because it is difficult to walk.
Suggest that he sees his doctor.

Likely an inguinal hernia - a type of hernia that occurs in the groin.
A hernia a tissue from inside the abdomen (fatty tissue or intestine) protruding through a weakness in the abdominal muscles. Shortly before a baby boy is born, the testicles descend from inside the abdomen to enter the scrotum. There is a small hole/tunnel through which they pass called the "inguinal canal." As an adult, the inguinal canal contains the spermatic cord. This hole is a natural weakness in the abdominal muscles and commonly forms a hernia. A hernia can come an go depending on the position. It is more dangerous if the tissue from inside the abdomen gets stucks in the hernia (incarcerated) because the tissue can lose blood flow and die (strangulated.)
This should be examined by a doctor to determine if it needs to be repaired.

It could be a inguinal hernia. I had two of them!! They were lumps right above my private. Somedays I saw them bigger than other days. I had surgery and got them fixed but i would do a little search on hernias and see if that's what it looks like. Mine were located in the area my balls would be if they never dropped. just above my testis

This sounds like a hernia. If you take your finger and press into the lump can your finger pass through his abdominal wall and into his bowels? It can go away with time but getting surgery is probably less painful and more convenient. The surgery is very simple and quick.

You were not real specific about size or location. Is it hard? Is there pain with it? What makes it go away or come back? What do you do for it? How long has he had it? When did he first notice it? My first thought is possibly a hernia. A complete physical exam can answer you question.

you need to be more elaborate.
my brother had a "bump" on his head that would come and go, but it turn out to just be some extra skin, but you should go get it checked up cuz the doctor thought it was small tumnor, or something of that sort
