The Return of the King is not a book. It is a one of three sections or volumes of the book The Lord of the Rings. It seems rather ridiculous to consider part of a book "classic" and not the rest of it. That's like saying that chapter seven of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is "classic," but the rest of the book is not.

Nonetheless, if you want to argue whether a book is classic, you'll have to consider how it influenced writing of its time period and after. The Lord of the Rings (including The Return of the King) shows the extent to which fiction might go: Complete languages, histories, worlds, and creatures can be conjured if one has the time and talent. The Lord of the Rings is a testament to the power of language and imagination.

Further, Tolkien's "classic" has motivated many aspiring writers, filmmakers, gamers, environmentalists, and re-enactors to re-present the adventures therein.

Your question is perhaps too large in scope to properly answer, but I hope to have offered some places to find an answer. Good luck!

Giving a book the title of "classic" doesn't have nearly as much to do with age as it does the book's enduring qualities. If a book appeals to an audience for a long period of time, it typically becomes a classic. An old book doesn't become a classis unless it's read widely over the years.

the idea of the Lord of the rings, which is actually supposed to be read as one big novel is a classic, good vs. evil. also, because of the book's age, it is considered classic. many people see parallels to our worl in that book than they do in any other, so that could also be it. also, tolkien's books were some of the first fantasy published, and it changed the way writers wite, and their topics.

Look up what the definition of a classic is. I think that ought to help you answer your question, especially if you have read the book. ; )
