All real actors, but some had much computer manipulation such as the Gollum-like creature, and the huge guy who is chained up. They would have used motion capture with the people, then graphically added and doctored the image.

Like someone said, pretty much every background was CGI, thus filmed on a green screen. Great movie!!

The 300 Spartans are all real in most scenes, but a lot of the *wide shots from a distance* of the Persian army are computer generated with the program called War. I think that is what it's called!
