I actually posed this question (about the known high suicide rate in their profession) to a dentist I used to know as I was curious to explain it too. Here's what he told me and it made some sense.
1) As stated by others, people are never happy to see them nor do they ever see the relief they do bring after someone's pain disappears-people only see a dentist when they are in pain or for some routine, but unpleasant, procedure. I think they often lack the opportunity to see the fruits of their labors.
2) Curiously, most dentists are perfectionists. They have to be in order to be able to be mindful of the intricate work they do where every detail matters, even as much as making sure a filling is ground down perfectly smoothly. We all know that perfectionism is highly correlated with depression and self-esteem issues, so suicide would be as well.

If your statement is fact then my thought on this for male dentists woulde be: After many years of putting your " tool " in so many peoples mouths a guilt complex arises to which there is no up rooting. Filling a void, capping and crowning does not bridge the gap in removing the painful depression that needles this profession. In the wisdom of that tooth by the same name the dentist removes from his plaque also his name. Dentists fall to leave this world and fill those cavities now in Heaven or Hell. Like the denture he once made that is the only impression he left on us.

Because they are always 'down in the mouth'?
Seriously, maybe because they tend to work alone and don't get much nice healthy social contact, doing fairly repetitive work with no real challenges, and have all the problems of running a business alone. Lone GP's and farmers have high suicide rates too.

There are a couple of factors.
1. They are handling mercury, which is very TOXIC and they INHALE it, then it is contaminating everything they touch in the office and they spread it into their cars and homes.
2. They are dealing with patients who, even to just get their teeth examined are often showing fear and pain in their eyes.

I have heard this too, you're right. I think I heard something like it is because of the small space they work in, and they are always following the same routine, they see the same "regulars". Lack of spontinaity and change, you know? It's my theory at least.
