A possible origin of Ernest Hemingway's supposed male chauvinism concerns his personal choices. He would spend cold days in Paris at a warm bar drinking and eating and smoking while his family froze at home. You may want to check out A Movable Feast, which is partially fiction, partially autobiographical, and which can show how his attitude towards women (in his real life) was not altogether flattering.
But to take Hemingway's life choices, judge them, and further ascribe that judgment to his work would be to miss out on some great writing. Another contributor suggests that "Hills Like White Elephants" is a chauvinist text. Only in these overly sensitive and politically correct times would someone suggest that a man writing about abortion is necessarily chauvinist.
It's true that often female characters are incidental in Hemingway's works. They read more like plot points and pit stops for his male protagonists. But Hemingway wrote a lot, and not everything he writes is from the perspective of a chauvinist. Basing a categorical judgment on part of his work cannot speak for the whole of the man.
Real life choices and some slanted writing contribute to Hemingway's reputation as a male chauvinist. It's probably sometimes deserved and sometimes a figment of politically correct imagination.
By the way, I'm not a Hemingway advocate. I don't read his writing often. Sometimes I enjoy his work and other times I find him overrated. Read his work for yourself before you judge.

in his novels and short stories look at the way he protrays females. In The Sun Also Rises the woman character is not necessarily praised, neither in The Snows of Kiliminjaro and White Elephants. I would research feminist approaches to Hemingway to get some answers and more opinions

You would have to read some of his books or stories to understand. I recommend Hills Like White Elephants for starters. Pax - C.
