Dowsing is just tapping into the energies underground.
Where there is water; flowing; this sets up a slight variation in the magnetic field.
There are all kinds of different ways to do dowsing,
the y shaped peach or apple limb.
the L shaped coat hangers
use of a pendulum
or if you are sensitive; scan for these subtle changes with your hands.
Many people who wok for phone or electric companies use dowsing to find the broken wires underground.

Dowsing is also commonly known as "water witching" (at least in Appalachia, where I live.)
It's generally done with a branch with a natural fork in it. Hazel is good, but I don't know that it has to be any particular kind. I mean, hazelnut, not witch hazel (Hamamelis, different family.)
You hold the two short ends of the "Y" in your hands, and walk around with the branch held parallel to the ground. If there's water, it generally twitches, and when you get closer to a good source of water, it will eventually jerk downward to point to the spot. People use it to find a good spot to dig a well.
Dowsing is also used sometimes to find ley lines, which are lines of power/magnetic force along the earth. Ley lines are probably the magnetic grid that birds use for navigation when they migrate, and churches/temples/spots of spiritual power are often built on ley lines. For example, Glastonbury, the spot where Avalon is traditionally held to be hidden, lies at a convergence of ley lines in southern England--these ley lines have a lot of churches and holy spots along them.
In the Vietnam War, soldiers sometimes used dowsing to find booby traps. They would often use dowsing "sticks" made of bent wire coat hangers, using just an "L" shape and holding the stick in one hand.
My mom said they used a dowser to find the spot to dig their well when she was a kid.

It's using natural energies/resonance to find water underground. Traditionally this was done with split apple, but these days it can be done with just about anything.
Like most things the success depends on the skill of the dowser.

"Dowsing" is the delusion that you can find underground water by walking around holding a stick.

also known as "water witching". walk around property with a "divider" (tree branch shaped like the letter "Y") to "sense" water sources underground. it is believed by many to be a "black art". (witchcraft) I agree....and would leave it alone.
