If a person was pointed out to you, and you never met them.....how would you view them, knowing they were an alcoholic?

I would feel sorry for them because alcoholism is a disease it's not something that they can control and they don't realize that they need help till they hit bottom, once that's happened if they seek help and take it they can lead a normal life so long as they stay away from it completely.
But I wouldn't get into a relationship with an active alcoholic, been there and done that and it wasn't fun.

I guess I view an alcoholic as someone that doesn't want to go anywhere that beer or alcohol isn't served, wants to drink anytime, anywhere. Would go to the store at midnight to buy beer if he ran out. That considers having a drink more important than most anything else that goes on in his life.

It would depend on what condition I saw them in, and where.

For example: If I saw a guy who was roomate to a friend, passed out drunk in his own room, I wouldnt think anything of it.

Now take the drunk who goes staggering down the street, yelling belligerently at everyone. I would think two things. First, I would think irresponsible idiot. Someone who goes out and gets plastered then wanders around out in public is obviously not a responsible individual. The second thought would be: Well, maybe this guy (or gal) had a really bad day-maybe a husband or wife passed away, maybe they lost their house or business, etc. I would still view this examples behavior as very irresponsible, but I would also want to know if there is any reason they might be acting in a very self destructive manner.

I don't even judge people, I've spent too much time with too many alcoholics and never criticized them for it, so I would overlook it and it wouldn't really weigh upon my initial impression of them. In fact, it might make me more likely to ask them to go have a drink if I knew they were willing and stigmatized. But I'm sure most wouldn't agree.
